The Rosetta Stone dates back to 196 BC. and inscribed in three languages by a decree of the Ptolemy King Ptolemy V: ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, Demotic script and ancient Greek. Discovered in 1799, it is the first bilingual ancient Egyptian text discovered in modern times. Until now, it has been impossible to decipher the language, and the discovery of this bilingualism means we can begin to understand pictographs. Thanks to the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, we can now translate almost any artifact using ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

The Terracotta Army is a fascinating group of terracotta sculptures depicting the army of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang. This is an example of funerary art created with the symbolic intent of protecting the future emperor. The history of the army can be traced back to the third century BC. backtracking. about 8000 soldiers, 130 tanks and
chariots and 520 horses. It tells us a lot about how Chinese soldiers were equipped at the time, the weapons they used and the clothes they wore.

Tanzania’s 30-mile-long Great Rift Valley contains most of what we know about human evolution and our species’ eventual existence. Fossil remains found in the Olduvai Gorge suggest that human ancestors arose as early as 1.9 million years ago.
They also show how our social and cognitive complexity has increased through stone tool use and hunter-gatherer lifestyles. Tool and animal remains found in the central area suggest evolving social interactions, which are increasingly evident in more recent remains. Our species, Homo Sapiens, is thought to have inhabited the site around 17,000 years ago.

The Altamira Caves are a fascinating example of where the fields of archaeology and anthropology meet to tell beautiful stories. The Spanish cave contains paintings of prehistoric mammals and human hands, the first such discovery made in 1880.
The discovery totally changed our understanding of prehistoric humans, who were previously believed to lack the intellectual capacity for artistic expression. The artefacts date back to between 14,000 and 20,000 years ago, giving us a glimpse into the lives of our very distant ancestors.

The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of 800 manuscripts found in 11 caves just 2 kilometers inland from the Dead Sea, near the ancient West Bank settlement of Khirbet Qumran.
These texts are among the earliest known biblical documents in Hebrew, dating back more than 700 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. They provide Bible translators with incredible insight and shed light on what the Bible looked like 2,000 years ago and how different people compiled it over the years.
