US Open > Medvedev: “I see players returning to the locker room with quite red faces”

After easily winning against Stefan Kozlov in the first round of the US Open on Monday, Daniil Medvedev hosted the post-match press conference by answering long and candid questions about the war between Russia and Ukraine and the jailing of basketball player Brittney Griner in Russia.

But the world number one also had the right to a little lighter questions concerning in particular the playing conditions at this US Open.

“For me the US Open has always been fast. The only time I felt it a little slow was when I came here for qualifying, but I hadn’t had a chance to play on the biggest stages in the world yet, so all the courts I played on were quite fast, because a lot of Challengers and Futures are played on fast surfaces. We were playing at night. I felt like it was super slow. I guess that was the wrong feeling. So, yeah, the courts are pretty fast. It was quite hot and humid today (Monday). I see players coming back to the locker room with pretty red faces. It’s also fun, in a way, to overcome these conditions. Even today, the game might not have been as intense and long, but, yes, I sweated a lot and it wasn’t easy. »
