Emotions make business successions complicated, according to a study published Thursday by Credit Suisse. For Sara Carnazzi-Weber, head of political and economic analysis at Credit Suisse, certain measures can be put in place to facilitate successions.
The Credit Suisse study shows that the bosses have difficulty passing the baton, postponing the succession at the last moment. In 80% of cases, it is health or age that are the cause of transmission
The attachment to their company is such that it “generates conflicts with the successors”, says Sara Carnazzi-Weber, head of political and economic analysis at Credit Suisse, at the microphone of La Matinale.
Underestimated problems
According to the study, 30% of successors indicate having had conflicts with predecessors and having had difficulty managing the transition phase. “This can hamper their entrepreneurial autonomy at the start of their career and create communication and understanding problems,” explains the Credit Suisse analyst.
To avoid conflicts, “the distribution of tasks must be very clear, especially when the succession process takes place over a long period”, she adds. Thus, Sara Carnazzi-Weber proposes, for example, to put them in written form.
“Many entrepreneurs underestimate these problems on an emotional and personal level and therefore do not consider taking outside help. This could also be a solution to try to manage conflicts that may arise, or to be already prepared to address certain questions,” she said.
