US Open. Zero points for the Swiss.

Zero points for the Swiss on the first day of the US Open! After the abandonment of Stan Wawrinka, Jil Teichmman and Alexander Ritschard experienced the throes of elimination.

Jil Teichmann: A third first-round elimination in New York.

TTY

No. 30 seed Jil Teichmann lost 6-4 6-2 to China’s Shuai Zhang to wrap up a disappointing North American tour. The left-hander led 3-1 before losing eleven of the last fourteen games of the meeting.

Eliminated in qualifying in San Jose and in the first round in Cincinnati despite a match point against Petra Kvitova, Jil Teichmann suffered further disappointment in New York where she lost for the third time in the first round. Eighth finalist this spring at Roland-Garros, the native of Barcelona had nevertheless been able to bounce back in Montreal with a success over the world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit. But she didn’t really know how to capitalize on this victory over the Estonian.

Coming from the qualifications, Alexander Ritschard (ATP 186) was beaten 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-3 by the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime (no 6). As at Wimbledon against Stefanos Tsitsipas for his Grand Slam baptism of fire, the Zurich native delivered the goods. He was able to produce interesting tennis. But he can however regret his lack of efficiency on break points with a 2 out of 12 which has not been forgiven against an opponent of the caliber of the Canadian.

As for Stan Wawrinka, he clarified in front of the microphones that his retirement against Corentin Moutet was due to muscle pain. Nothing serious therefore for the Vaudois who still hopes to play six tournaments this year. “Even if the end is near, I still have a few years left,” he explains. I know I can still win matches.”
