Switzerland comes to the aid of Pakistan, which is facing severe flooding due to unrelenting monsoon rains since June. It sends four experts from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Corps (CSA) on Tuesday and participates in international funds to the tune of eight million francs a year.

Ignace CassisPresident of the Confederation

“My thoughts are with the millions of people affected by the devastating floods in Pakistan,” tweeted Confederation President Ignazio Cassis on Tuesday morning. “We are sending a team of experts (from the CSA) to support humanitarian aid on the spot in collaboration with the Swiss Embassy in Pakistan,” he continued.

The FDFA added that the UN has made available three million US dollars for the first emergency aid measures in Pakistan, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) a half a million. Switzerland contributes five million to the UN fund and three million to the IFRC.

Bern is currently evaluating other humanitarian aid measures.

Call for donations

For its part, Swiss Solidarity appeals to the generosity of the Swiss. Donations can be made now on www.bonheur.ch or on the postal account 10-15000-6 with the mention “Floods in Pakistan”, she indicates in a press release.

With this money, Swiss Solidarity will be able to quickly implement projects led by its partners, such as Helvetas or Solidar Suisse, to meet immediate and long-term needs. Once people are sheltered, priority will be given to the prevention of health risks, the distribution of food and access to drinking water and basic necessities.
