The “Capital” program was dedicated to the major commercial destocking areas on Sunday August 28th. With therefore the possibility of having good plans at affordable prices, which is not a luxury in this back-to-school period. The economics magazine M6 followed several brands to discover their working methods. Among them, Noz, a French chain of generalist destocking stores: decoration, home, food, textiles… which has 327 stores in France. The voice-over of “Capital” indicates: “To discover the little secrets of Noz’s success, you have to go to Mayenne, near Laval, to the company’s headquarters. It is here that a team of several hundred players find the best batches of products for the 327 stores all over the planet. True bargain specialists.” The cameras of “Capital” then arrive in a sort of American-style campus with fairly loud music and wheeled cars. “Here, having fun is mandatory, it’s part of the working day.”
At Noz, head office employees therefore work in a good mood. The Marketing and Purchasing departments are convened by a hoverboard facilitator to “find out more about the ranking, the podiums of the three best teams that make the difference in this month of July”. Several times a day, employees leave their desks to find the host and applaud to set the mood. They will discover the ranking of employees: “depending on its total purchases made, each team will know where it stands in relation to its monthly objective and in relation to its colleagues”. The idea is therefore to develop the spirit of competition within the company. Some employees come to receive a cup rewarding their good performance. Every day, yellow, green and polka dot jerseys are distributed, as on the Tour de France. And that’s not all.
The teams that have won distinctive jerseys must compete in pedal kart races through the premises of the headquarters of Noz. Under the applause of their colleagues, the employees rush to win the race, a relay against the clock. If the result of said race is without stake, those who keep the yellow jersey of best seller until the end of the month will have a reward of a few hundred euros in vouchers. For the facilitator, it is not wasted time but “time to gain”. He indicates that “on an effective eight-hour day, we cannot be fully concentrated all the time, so we allow ourselves to have depressurizations on the achievement of our objectives.” These management methods have dismayed the viewers of “Capital” who obviously would not like to evolve in this kind of company where, for them, the employees force themselves to have fun. And when they learn that some have to buy 270,000 euros of goods to achieve the objectives, at very low prices, that there are real-time tables which indicate where the team members are in terms of sales, it depresses them a little more. Even if the bonuses can be interesting, allowing to go from a salary just above the SMIC to an average salary of 2800 euros gross in the event of objectives achieved.
