For the first time, the canton of Lucerne has a wrestling king with Joel Wicki. On Wednesday evening, thousands of people welcomed the 25-year-old young man to his municipality of Sörenberg LU and celebrated him as it should.

Joël Wicki is only the second wrestler from central Switzerland to have won the title of king of wrestling, 36 years after Harry Knüsel. A delegation from the Lucerne Council of State attended the reception on Wednesday evening alongside Federal Councilor Ueli Maurer, who personally congratulated Joël Wicki on his success.

In his speech, Ueli Maurer called Joël Wicki “a king worthy of the name”. His way of wrestling is “unique”. We feel in him the pleasure of the fight and the respect of the adversary.
